Ayurvedic massages and treatments have become quite popular not only to address specific illnesses but also promote good health in general. While it is possible for people to avail Ayurvedic treatments at probably the nearest spa or wellness center, there no better place to experience authentic therapy than the Government-authorized treatment centers in Kerala, especially Shirodhara.
Shirodhara, is one of the powerful Ayurveda treatments that proves to be an effective remedy for several ailments triggered by mind and body disorders. It is known to purify, rejuvenate, calm and strengthen the central nervous system and the mind that control all bodily functions and responses, refreshing the entire body in the process.
The person is treated using a regulated flow of liquid (Dhara) on the (fore) head (Shiro). The Dhara is directed either at the center of the forehead or across the forehead. The liquid used usually differs based on the problem that needs to be treated:
- Jala Dhara (plain or coconut water)
- Ksheera Dhara (milk)
- Takra Dhara (buttermilk)
- Taila Dhara (oils – Chandanadhi, Narayana, Dhanwantharam, herbal or even plain coconut or sesame oil)
- Kwatha Dhara (medicinal formulations)
Treatment is carried out using a mud or metal pot that has a wick running through a central hole at bottom of the unit. When the pot is filled with warm oil and strung securely from a specific height, oil flows through the wick and steadily drips on the patient’s forehead and drains off down the neck. A steady oscillation of the pot will ensure that oil flows uniformly across the forehead.
The duration of this treatment can vary from 25 to 60 minutes and is usually administered in a warm and quiet setting. Adequate precautions are taken to cover the eyes, nostrils and ears. Ayurveda treatments reportedly are more beneficial during the monsoon season when herbal ingredients are highly effective and the body more responsive.
From simple anxiety, stress and headaches to more complicated health conditions, authentic Shirodhara treatments by experienced and expert practitioners can alleviate several disorders in an effective manner. A Kerala holiday is a great way to experience this alternative form of medicine.
